• The Controller/Timer for a floating TX must have special safety circuitry in place for all new and upgraded manual transguns. This is a safety issue and it is very important.



• Floating transformers for the resistance welding process are considered a safe way to use them for spot welding. However, there is a potential future risk of the transformer failing internally to the secondary. Therefore floating transformer secondaries are no longer permitted. They must be grounded and they must have fail safe disconnect circuits that ensure they are grounded. Alternate paths for grounding are not enough. The special disconnects must be included. It is the end users responsibility to improve their equipment to meet this new standard. It is not an option because voltages above 80 volts can seriously injure or even kill someone.

Unless there is a path to ground for both the secondary circuit and the transformer case, of proper size to carry the current until the breaker activates or the fuse blows, the transfomer is considered floating. This is no longer permitted. In addition, for manually manipulated spot welding devices (primarily transguns) there must be a special disconnect with sensors to ensure the ground is in place. It should also be used for robotic spot welding because if changing the electrodes is not automatic then during electrode changing an accident could occure.

The device required is fairly simple. It consists of a large copper wire, a smaller sense lead, a special breaker, and sensing circuitry that will activate if the ground or sense lead is by-passed or cut.
